Introducing The Widex Allure by Tracy James MSc CS RHAD
The Widex Allure have been around for just under a year now. The difference in the sound quality seems to be quite marked. It really is such a natural sound – Widex’s philosophy or processing of sound is based on timing, so it really has quite a different sound to other manufacturers. People often put the aids on and their faces light up and say ‘WOW!’.
What’s great about the Allure is the ability to use AI in more tricky auditory settings, via the app on my Smart Phone. There are the set programmes and automatics which you can select, but the AI is useful in noisy areas that are not typical. For example, I used AI in a Soft Play setting – the AI asks you a series of questions about where you are, and what you want to hear or experience and you can choose the best set up for you. Now I just activate ‘Soft Play’ on my device before entering the building (or I could geo-tag it if I wished) – there are no acoustics like it!
I’m an audiologist and my choice is to use Widex – and this is based on the sound quality for me. I love the ‘Pure Sound’ programme in particular which removes as much of the electronic processing as possible in the environment – for the best sound.
However, not one aid suits all people and other brands may have other advantages that are better suited to other people / hearing loss types. I’ve found that Widex suits milder-moderate high-frequency losses best, or those with a new hearing loss (as they’ve got a lot of natural hearing mixed in with amplification). I’ve also found that more unusual hearing losses are better suited to Widex due to it’s flexibility in programming – accurate frequency matching of prescription targets. My hearing loss is an usual cookie bite, and this brand was the only brand that gave me absolute benefit in amplification – presumably due to it’s resolution.
